Visans Skepp

Unique monument in Storebro

The monument Visans Skepp (Ship of Songs) is located on the shore of the old mill pond in the historic industrial town Storebro, about 12 kilometers south of Vimmerby.

Visans Skepp is built in the style of buildings from the Viking era as a great modern stone setting and is a monument for the most popular Swedish folk tunes and songs.

The stone ship was built in the years 1984 to 1988 from a total of 20 vertical stones, which are between 1.80 and 3.40 meters high. On both sides of the stones, carefully selected lyrics are engraved, so that the monument represents the 40 most popular Swedish folk songs of modern times.

The first stone representing the bow of the ship bears the text of the Swedish national anthem "Du gamla du fria" on one side and the text of the Småland song on the other side. On the other stones are lyrics by Carl Michael Bellman, Evert Taube, Dan Andersson and other well-known greats of Swedish music history as well as the lyrics of the most popular Swedish folk tunes.

The monument can be visited all year round. The path to the monument passes through a turnstile that, after insertion of a rather symbolic entrance fee of 10 crowns, gives access to the area.
