Former armory in Malmö

The Kommendanthuset in Malmö was built in 1786 as an arsenal of the fortress Malmöhus. Weapons and military equipment were formerly stored here.

The building is located northwest of Malmöhus Slott. Typical of the former military architecture, the Kommendanthuset was built in classicist style. The red-painted facade of the two-storey building is fully plastered and the roof is covered with copper plates. At the ground floor, you can find a small ecologically café.

Kommendanthuset is built.

Early 19th century

A military hospital is established on the first floor and the ground floor serves as a storage room. Soon afterwards, the whole building is transformed completely into an arsenal again.

Malmöhus Castle is now a prison and the prison commander uses the building as its home - which becomes the Kommendanthuset.

The building is used as emergency shelter for homeless people between the first and second world war.

Kommendanthuset is getting restored and obtains its original appearance.
