Hvilans Gymnastiksal

Sweden's oldest gymnasium in Åkarp

Hvilans Gymnastiksal is the oldest gymnasium in Sweden. It is situated on the grounds of Folkshögskolan Hvilan in Åkarp, about 3 kilometers northeast of Arlöv.

The gymnasium was built as a wooden structure following the Danish model in 1884 and is still used regularly. It belongs to Folkshögskolan Hvilan, founded in 1868 and thus the oldest community college in Sweden.

At the end of the 1980s, the attached facade was removed and the building has been restored from the ground up. It has its original appearance today. As a typical example of the idiom and the craftsmanship of Nordic national romanticism of the 19th century, the gym was declared an architectural monument in 1991.
