Värmlands Museum

Provincial museum in Karlstad

Värmlands Museum is the cultural history museum of the province of Värmland. It is located north of the historic old town of Karlstad within the present-day district of Tingvallastaden on the banks of the river Klarälven.

In 1839, Anders Lignell donated a collection of antiques to what later became the museum foundation Värmlands Museiförening. This was the impetus for the creation of the museum. However, it was not until 90 years later, in 1929, that the museum building was completed and opened. The striking yellow building offers 1,100 m² of exhibition space and is known as Cyrillushuset, after the Stockholm architect Cyrillus Johansson, who designed the building.

The falun red annex building, also called Nyrénhuset, was designed by Carl Nyrén and completed in 1988. It expanded the museum with modern facilities such as an auditorium, museum shop, café and restaurant.

Discover Värmlands Museum

The museum is divided into three basic exhibitions where you can learn more about the history of Värmland or immerse yourself in Värmland art with a focus on the 20th century. In the Science Centre, various experiments are waiting for you to try them out. In total, the museum has a collection of around 40,000 objects, 9,000 works of art and 1,000,000 photographs.

Scattered throughout Värmland, the museum preserves various historical sites for posterity. Among them is the historic farm Von Echstedtska Gården near Säffle. Actually almost a manor house, the building dates from 1764 and presents unique ceiling paintings and a garden with herbs and old apple trees. At the visitor centre Torsby Finnskogscentrum near the Norwegian border, you can learn more about the history of the Finnish settlers who lived in the local forests. And at Långbans Gruv- & Kulturby, you can experience the history of mining first hand, through the preservation of the old buildings and various exhibitions.

Värmlands Museum App

The official app of Värmlands Museum provides you with information about the historical sites outside the museum, but also offers various tours, for example through the old town of Karlstad. It is designed to be used when you are on site. The app is available free of charge for iOS and Android, but as of May 2021, it is only available in Swedish.

Sweden's most visited Länmuseum

Every year, 200,000 to 250,000 people visit the museum, making it the most visited provincial museum in Sweden. Its location in Sandgrundsudden probably contributes to this. The headland is a popular recreational area close to the city centre and has space for its own museum park. In 2005, Värmlands Museum was named Museum of the Year by the Swedish Museum Association.

All areas of the museum are barrier-free and lifts are available. People with a mobility impairment can use the parking spaces directly at the main entrance of the museum.
