Mini-Map of Sweden with marker at Ystads Kommun

Ystads Kommun

Artists, thrillers, beaches

The area of the municipality Ystad forms an approximately 40 km long and up to 17 km wide coastal strip at the southeastern edge of the province Skåne. The eastern half of the municipality lies in the landscape Österlen, which is well-known for its numerous artists.

The Ysatd region is not only popular among artists, but also has a larger than average number of tourist destinations. These include well-known attractions like Ales Stenar, Sweden's largest ship tumulus and the 10-kilometer long beach Sandhammaren, which is considered one of the most beautiful sandy beaches in Sweden.

The coast between Nybrostrand and Kåseberga has a very different shape in form of the so-called Hammars Backar. The glaciers of the last Ice Age has left a peculiar hilly landscape, which abruptly ends at the sea as high cliffs.

In addition to numerous prehistoric findings, some beautiful castles, impressive estates and medieval churches are the evidence of a long settlement history in the region. The somewhat fairytale-like castle Marsvinsholms Slott, for example, has a freely accessible park with a sculpture exhibition, also known as Marsvinsholms sculpture park.

Among the historical churches in the region, Valleberga Kyrka is the only remaining round church in Skåne. Dating back to the 12th centuryn the church of Bjäresjö, however, is known for its rare wall paintings from the early 13th century.

Main place of the municipality is the 13th century port city Ystad. The town center has remained in its medieval style with narrow streets and beautiful old houses largely preserved to this day. The oldest building in town is the Marienkyrkan from around 1200, with the only remaining tower guard in Sweden.

Ystad is a also a non-religious sanctuary - namely for fans of the detective stories around Kurt Wallander, the famous inspector by author Henning Mankell. There are tours to individual locations of the films and the film studios of Ystad. One focus is the film museum Cineteket with its extensive collection of props from the film adaptations of the novels.

The municipality Ystad consists of 9 towns with more than 200 inhabitants. With almost 18,500 inhabitants, the main town Ystad is the largest in the municipality. The next smaller location with only about 1,150 inhabitants is Köpingebro, followed by Svarte (900 inhabitants) and Nybrostrand (800 inhabitants).
