Halahults Offerlund

Sacrificial site in Halahult

The ancient sacrificial grove Halahults Offerlund is one of the most remarkable ancient sites of the region and is located in a small forest in Halahult, about 20 kilometers northeast of Karlshamn.

Halahults Offerlund consists of an irregular circle of five massive boulders on a natural terrace. Each of the stones contains runic characters and recesses. Like an animal paw print, the imprint of a human foot sole or a pit which looks like the bottom of a hand.

The runes on the stones date from the 13th and 14th century. According to lore, sacrifices were made here even in the 17th century. While it does not believed that it is a place of sacrifice from pagan times, it is still a remarkable site of cultural history.
